Atsugishi Bridge
The 456.5-meter-long Atsugishi Bridge, which connects the Konan and Kohoku areas, was opened in September 1972 as the first marine bridge in Hokkaido.
Prior to the construction of the Atsugishi Ohashi Bridge, transportation was provided by the Japan Highway Public Corporation's ferryboat, the Atsugishimaru, and before that, people and automobiles were transported by town-operated ferryboats. However, in winter, the ferry was often cancelled due to ice floes and ice formation, and in the 1960s, as the number of automobiles owned increased, transportation by ferry reached its limit.
A borehole survey of the seafloor revealed that it was feasible to build a bridge, and after three years of construction from 1969, the bridge was completed, fulfilling the town's greatest desire.
