Former Upper Algae Separate Station Relay
The former Kamimobetsu Ekitei is located in Kamimobetsu, 23 km south from the central part of Monbetsu City, and was built in Taisho 15 (1926) as a government-established "Ekitei." An Ekiteisho refers to a building based on a system unique to Hokkaido after the Meiji era that integrated transportation, communication, and lodging, such as relaying people and horses and accommodating travelers, and in the Monbetsu region, this "former Kamimobetsu Ekitei" has become the only existing Ekitei structure. It is an old building possessing an architectural form unique to Hokkaido from the pre-war period, and in October Heisei 20 (2008), it was designated as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Every Saturday from April to November, a tour experience by volunteer guides is also currently underway.
