Historic Site: Ruins of Shiraoi Sendai Domain Camp
Overview
In the 3rd year of Ansei Era, the Shogunate ordered the Sendai Domain and other Ou Domains to guard the Ezo region in preparation for the southward expansion of Russian power during the opening of Japan to the outside world. The area covered from Shiraoi to Kunashiri and Etorofu Islands. The former Shiraoi camp functioned as the core of the security.
