Hobetsu Museum

The Mukawa Hobetsu Museum exhibits fossils mainly from the Hobetsu area of Mukawa Town. On display are the fossils of an elasmosaur, mosasaurs, ammonites, and inoceramuses that lived during the late Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era (the strata distributed in the Hobetsu area date back to about 100 million to 70 million years ago). Since the Hobetsu area was an oceanic area at that time, it produced many of these marine creatures, but it also produced one dinosaur and one land tortoise, which lived on land. Dolphins, whales, and Desmostylus from the Cenozoic Era (the strata in the Hobetsu area date from about 45 million years ago to the present) are also on display.
When the museum first opened, humanities materials were also collected and displayed. These materials are now stored in a storage facility and are used in classes at schools in the town.
