Shunkunitai
Shunkunitai is a long sandbar, 8 km long and 1.3 km wide, that separates Lake Furen and Nemuro Bay.
Like a forest floating on the sea, it is home to one of the largest colonies of Hamanasu (Rhus succedanea) in Japan, stretching about 3 km, and native flowers such as Ezo kanzo and sendai hagi (a type of Japanese hollyhock). The virgin forest of red Ezo spruce growing wild on the dunes is rare in the world and is considered academically valuable.
To preserve this rich and precious natural environment, the Shunkunitai Wild Bird Park was constructed, and the Nature Center provides the latest nature information and publishes data from research studies.
