Japan's northernmost rice town, nurturing scallops by the sea

Population:2,300
Our hometown, Enbetsu, began its development in Meiji 30 (1897) when our ancestors first cultivated this land, and it was officially established as a town in Showa 24 (1949). Throughout this time, it has developed by overcoming numerous hardships in the harsh nature of northern Hokkaido.
The town's industry is primarily based on primary sectors, with agriculture at its core, as it is the northernmost limit of rice cultivation in Japan. As Japan's northernmost rice-producing area, it produces high-quality glutinous rice, as well as vegetables like melons, spinach, and asparagus, which are reputed for their excellent taste.
In fisheries, efforts are being made to farm and ship scallop spat to production areas, and to add value to locally caught seafood for production and sale.
In commerce and industry, while valuing human warmth and a modern sensibility, the town is striving to develop vibrant businesses by selling local products, including the local sake "Kitafubuki," and working to improve the shopping district.
