Dairy town of gold rush history and northernmost cave

Population:1,500
Nakatonbetsu, a mountain-ringed town in northern Hokkaido's Soya region, has a population of about 1,700. Known for severe winters reaching -30°C and refreshing summers, it is an ideal summer retreat. As a dairy farming town where cows outnumber people, it also boasts a history of gold rushes, and visitors can still enjoy gold panning today. A major highlight is the Nakatonbetsu Limestone Cave, Japan's northernmost, which features mystical ice stalagmites during the winter season.
