Suttsu Town is a small port town located on the coast of the Sea of Japan in the southwestern part of Hokkaido, situated midway between Sapporo and Hakodate.
The town's history dates back more than 370 years, making it one of the oldest in Hokkaido. It once prospered from herring fishing, and historical buildings such as the "Kakuju Sato Family Residence" (a tangible cultural property of Hokkaido) and the "Herring Mansion" attest to its past wealth. Today, the town is supported by abundant marine resources, including atka mackerel, trout, yellowtail, squid, salmon, Suttsu oysters, scallops, sea urchin, abalone, monkfish, and crab.
On the other hand, it is one of the windiest areas in the country. Suttsu was the first municipality in Japan to introduce wind power generation utilizing these strong winds. The strong winds are transformed into clean energy and reinvested into the town's development.
In recent years, the town has been promoting development with the keyword "exchange with urban areas." It is developing stay-and-exchange programs centered on providing food that utilizes the "sea," the region's greatest resource, as well as industrial events and fishing experiences, attracting many visitors to the town.
The entire community is working together to revitalize the town by viewing its sea-centered regional resources as the "town's charm" and promoting exchange with urban areas.
