Shakotan Peninsula town of premium tarako, rich seafood, and history

Population:2,600
Furubira Town, located on the eastern coast of the Shakotan Peninsula, has a population of about 3,200. Accessible in under an hour from Otaru, its name comes from the Ainu word "Fure-pira" (red cliff). Flourishing as a herring fishing ground since the Edo period, the town continues to thrive on fishing and seafood processing. While fresh shrimp, octopus, and Atka mackerel are caught locally, Furubira is especially famous nationwide for its premium processed "tarako" (salted pollock roe). The town is actively working to preserve its traditional seafood industries for future generations.
