Fishermen, Hunters, Dairy Farmers: Producers Launch 'PIRUY,' a Town Guidebook for Hiroo, Tokachi
In Hiroo Town, located in Hokkaido's Tokachi region, a unique "town guidebook created by producers" called "PIRUY" was launched on April 1, 2022. It's a creative collaboration of people engaged in primary industries, such as dairy farmers and fishermen.

This 52-page booklet is packed with the deep, authentic charm of Hiroo Town, featuring recommended spots, gourmet information, and profiles of fascinating locals, including hunters, surfers, fishermen, and woodcraft artists who thrive in Hiroo's rich natural environment.

The "Extraordinary" Editorial Team of Producers
Maya Nakamura, who served as the editor-in-chief, is a former editor for a food media publication. She moved to Hiroo Town in April 2022. We spoke with her about the launch of the guidebook.
Maya Nakamura

Hunter & Editor
Originally from Miyagi Prefecture, she transitioned from being a food media editor to a hunter. She is affectionately known as "Shikajo Mayamon" (Deer Girl Mayamon). With the motto of savoring life respectfully and deliciously, she handles the entire process from hunting deer to processing the meat. She is also active as a freelance editor, designing logos and pamphlets, writing, and planning events.
――What inspired you to create "PIRUY"?
At first, we were just talking about making a map of Hiroo Town. But I wanted to create something more lasting, and I also thought I could use my skills as a former magazine editor.
Then, Aki Kikuchi, a dairy farmer and the head of Piroro Kikaku, gave the green light, saying, "Alright, let's make a cool magazine about Hiroo, even if we have to self-publish!" Kōichi Hoshi, a fisherman and co-representative, added, "If there are budding talents in our town, I want to help them grow. I've never worked as a writer or editor, but I'll do everything I can to help." And just like that, our "extraordinary" editorial team of producers was formed, and we started the project.

――Are there any particular points you'd like readers to notice?
We made a conscious effort to conduct "interviews that didn't feel like interviews," focusing on having fun with the whole process. Even during interviews, we enjoyed the conversation and took our time to experience things fully. For photoshoots, the photographer shot freely as they pleased. I've done many interviews, but I've rarely been on a project this free-spirited.

For the story on the old man in the beet field, we just ran into the field and suddenly asked for an interview (laughs). I think you can feel throughout PIRUY that everyone on the production team truly enjoyed their time in Hiroo Town.
