Tengu Manju Honpo: Discover the Secret Behind This Beloved Iwamizawa Sweet!
In every region, there are local sweets that have been cherished for generations. Today, we're introducing a treat that everyone in Iwamizawa knows: "Tengu Manju." Let's take a closer look at what kind of manju (sweet bun) it is.

Tengu Manju is made and sold by "Tengu Manju Honpo," a company founded in 1954. Currently, there are two locations in Iwamizawa: the Ekimae (station front) store and the 5-jo store. We visited the 5-jo store, which also houses the production facility.

Upon entering the store, we were greeted by an array of sweets sitting in a classic, old-fashioned display case. We immediately went to check out the Tengu Manju!

Wow, they come in three colors: red, white, and brown! They are small enough to be eaten in two or three bites, and at just 110 yen each (tax included), the price is very reasonable. This makes it easy to try all three flavors.

Breaking one open reveals a generous filling of smooth red bean paste (koshian). It has the distinct sweetness of a traditional manju. It's a delightful, simple flavor that makes you think, "Yes, this is exactly the kind of classic treat I was craving!"

A perfect companion to the Tengu Manju is the "Kusa Manju" (mugwort manju), also 110 yen (tax included). It comes in two varieties, one with smooth red bean paste (koshian) and the other with coarse red bean paste (tsubuan). The flavor of mugwort spreads throughout your mouth, complementing the sweetness of the bean paste.

For those who want to try something a little different, how about the "Banana" (110 yen, tax included)? It's not just named banana; it looks like one too. And of course, it tastes like banana. This is actually a steamed cake with a gentle, subtly sweet texture.

Another popular item among Tengu Manju Honpo's many offerings is the soft-serve ice cream (290 yen, tax included). It's incredibly rich and generously sized. Getting this for just three 100-yen coins is such a great deal!

All of their products are reasonably priced and have a timeless taste that you won't get tired of, so it's easy to see why they have been cherished by the people of Iwamizawa for so long. When you visit Iwamizawa, be sure to pick some up for yourself and as souvenirs.
