Activities you can enjoy on Rishiri Island
First, let's look at the activities you can experience in Rishiri Town on Rishiri Island. Have you heard of the currently popular marine sport "SUP"? SUP is an abbreviation for "Stand Up Paddle Board," and as the name suggests, you stand on a board and paddle.
It may seem difficult at first glance, but even beginners can do it! The pleasure of walking in the sea of Rishiri Island, which boasts some of the clearest waters in Hokkaido, is something you can only get here. The view from the sea is also amazing.
Only in Rishiri Town can you try out the "sea urchin harvesting experience," which is something you rarely hear about elsewhere. It's a full-fledged experience using the same tools as fishermen from a small boat tied to the shore. Needless to say, the taste of the fresh sea urchins you harvest yourself is...exceptional!
We also recommend the "Seal Feeding Experience." There is a natural rocky coast observation area along the seaside of Senboushi Misaki Park, where you can buy food at a nearby souvenir shop and feed it to the seals. You'll be captivated by the watery eyes of the seals when you see them up close.
Furthermore, Rishiri Island has a cycling road where you can enjoy magnificent scenery and feel the sea breeze while cycling! There are three types of model courses: a course that goes around the island, the Blue Line Course that takes 3 to 4 hours to enjoy both cycling and the scenery, and the Green Line Course that can be enjoyed by families with children in 1 to 2 hours. You can enjoy Rishiri Island at your own pace according to your schedule.
"Sea kayaking" in Rishiri-Fuji Town, where you can enjoy the sea of Rishiri Island, allows you to see Rishiri kelp and sea urchins in the highly transparent waters, also known as Rishiri Blue, and you can also encounter wildlife such as seabirds and seals, making for an experience that will make you lose track of time. Kayak fishing is also popular as an exciting experience where you can catch bottom fish and migratory fish!
Also, if you want to experience the natural beauty of Rishiri Island at a leisurely pace, we recommend trekking. The trail courses starting from Rishirifuji Town are set up in various lengths, and you can easily enjoy them in sneakers, which is a great plus. Along the way, you can soothe your tired body with the Kanro Spring Water, one of Japan's 100 famous waters. In winter, you can experience backcountry skiing and snowshoeing on Mount Rishiri, which stands tall in the center of the island, so be sure to check it out!
On the other hand, on Rebun Island, which is further north than Rishiri Island, trekking is definitely recommended!
