Loved by Locals for Over a Century! The Secrets of Hokkaido's Exclusive Sodas: Ribbon Napolin & Ribbon Citron
If you ask anyone in Hokkaido about a soda they all know, the first names that come to mind are "Ribbon Citron" and "Ribbon Napolin." While there are many major soda brands, many people have fond memories of that perfectly balanced fizziness from their childhood! This time, we'll delve into the secrets of Ribbon Napolin and Ribbon Citron, which have been loved by the people of Hokkaido for over a century.
The History of Ribbon Citron & Ribbon Napolin
Ribbon Citron and Ribbon Napolin are Hokkaido-exclusive carbonated drinks currently sold by Pokka Sapporo Food & Beverage Ltd., part of Sapporo Holdings. When they were first released, Citron and Napolin didn't have "Ribbon" in their names. Citron was born in 1909 (Meiji 42) and Napolin in 1911 (Meiji 44). At the time, Citron was inspired by the lemon water popular in Europe, which was said to be good for one's health, while Napolin was made using blood orange juice.
The name "Ribbon" was added to both drinks in 1914 (Taisho 3), three years after Napolin's release. This was because ribbons themselves were very fashionable at the time, and the company wanted to give the product a more premium and sophisticated image.
In 1957 (Showa 32), 43 years after the Ribbon brand was established, the brand's mascot, Ribbon-chan, was born. Ribbon Citron celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009, followed by Ribbon Napolin in 2011. Although the label designs have changed periodically, both Citron and Napolin remain sodas that every Hokkaido resident knows, quenching the thirst of generations.
The Secrets of Ribbon Citron & Ribbon Napolin's Flavor and Color
Ribbon Citron
Ribbon Citron and Ribbon Napolin are classic sodas for Hokkaido residents, but what makes them different from other carbonated drinks? First, the colorless and transparent Ribbon Citron is known for its strong carbonation kick and refreshing taste. A subtle "scent of first-picked lemons" wafts from the drink, making it incredibly easy to drink. It is currently sold in 1.5L bottles and 190ml cans and can often be found in supermarkets and drugstores throughout Hokkaido.

Next, Ribbon Napolin is a beverage crafted with a focus on gentle, natural ingredients. The "Napolin flavor," which offers a distinct sweetness balanced with strong carbonation, uses beet sugar produced in Hokkaido. Furthermore, its impressively warm orange color is derived from plant-based paprika coloring. This warm, deep orange hue might be one of the reasons it has been so beloved in Hokkaido. The Napolin lineup includes 1.5L, 470ml, 340ml, and 190ml sizes. You can purchase it in many places, including souvenir shops, supermarkets, and convenience stores.
