Sapporo City

On April 2, 2024, it was announced that AEON Hokkaido will acquire nine stores in Hokkaido operated by supermarket chain Seiyu. The nine Seiyu stores currently in operation are all located in Sapporo City, and in the past Seiyu also had stores in Iwamizawa and Takikawa, which have long been familiar to local residents. This section traces the history of Seiyu from its arrival in Hokkaido to the present.

Seiyu arrived in Hokkaido around the time of the Sapporo Olympics

Seiyu was born in 1963. The name "Seiyu" is derived from "Seibu no Tomo," and at that time, the parent company was Seibu Department Store, a member of the former Seibu Group. The first store to land in Hokkaido was the Tsukisamu store in 1973. At that time, the Sapporo Winter Olympics had just ended in 1972, and Sapporo was undergoing major urbanization, and major department stores and supermarkets were also expanding into the area. Since then, the company has continued to open new stores in Hokkaido, increasing to 11 at its peak, but currently nine stores in Sapporo are still in operation.

MUJI, which was Seiyu's private brand

In 1979, MUJI was listed on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. At the same time, in 1980, MUJI was created as Seiyu's private brand, which is still well known today. MUJI was the face of Seiyu until 1990, when the business rights were transferred to Ryohin Keikaku. In 2000, Seiyu launched Japan's first Internet supermarket business, ushering in the era of Internet shopping and moving to the forefront of the supermarket industry.
