"It's just too good..." A Travelogue from Japan's Northernmost Island Goes Viral, with Footage by University Students Hailed as "the Essence of Youth"
Rebun Island, known as Japan's northernmost remote island, is a small island of about 80 square kilometers floating roughly 60 km west of Wakkanai. A travelogue documenting a summer spent on this very island by a group of university students has been capturing hearts on social media.
I really love this vlog of Rebun Island that I shot with a Lumix GH5 I bought for 70,000 yen.
For just 70,000 yen, you can shoot in 10-bit Log and get 5-axis image stabilization. If you're thinking of getting into videography, I think you should just go for it. It's an incredibly cost-effective camera...

The creator of the video, Nanashiki, visited Rebun Island in August 2024, during the summer vacation of his sophomore year of university. He shared that while spending time with his friends, he was struck by a sense of being overwhelmed by the island's "sheer difference in scale."
What always amazed me after coming to this northernmost land was the difference in scale. When you encounter things and phenomena on a scale different from what you're used to, there are moments when you feel the outline of your own existence as an individual organism become sharper. I thought it resembled a single drop of oil floating in a cold soup, or a winged insect that had wandered into a house. It was an almost entirely new experience for me, but I found this tangible sense of my own outline to be very beautiful.
A time to step away from the everyday and reflect on one's own existence amidst vast nature. A trip to Rebun Island may just offer such an experience.
