What is the Hakodate Port Festival?
The Hakodate Port Festival is Hakodate's largest summer festival, held annually from August 1st to 5th in Hakodate, Hokkaido. It is a historic festival that began in 1935 to pray for recovery from the Great Hakodate Fire of 1934. The Doshin Fireworks Display on the first day lights up the Hakodate night sky. On the second day, the Wasshoi Hakodate parade takes place, where citizens parade through the streets dancing the "Hakodate Minato Odori" and the "Hakodate Ika Odori." During the festival, numerous food stalls line the Daimon district, centered around Hakodate Green Plaza.
Day 1, Aug 1 (Fri): The 70th Doshin Fireworks Display & More
The highlight of the first day is the 70th Doshin Fireworks Display. The program, scheduled to have five parts, will feature wide starmines, powerful 12-inch shells, set-piece fireworks, and water fireworks launched in sync with music. The fireworks launched from Hakodate Port are truly spectacular! Part 3 will be a special collaboration with music from the local Hakodate rock band, GLAY. Titled "GLAY × Fireworks ~DREAMY~," you can enjoy a stunning performance of GLAY's music and fireworks.

On the second and third days, the Wasshoi Hakodate parade is held. Many citizens, dressed in various costumes, dance the "Hakodate Minato Odori" and "Hakodate Ika Odori" as they parade through the streets, creating an atmosphere so lively that even spectators along the roadside start dancing. This main summer parade in Hakodate also features powerful mikoshi (portable shrines) leading the parade and brilliantly decorated floats that are a must-see.
