About a 30-minute drive from JR Sapporo Station, Chateraise Gateaux Kingdom Sapporo is a resort hotel in the suburbs of Sapporo with a Chateraise confectionery factory on-site. The lunch buffet held on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays at its restaurant, Vigne, is incredibly popular. For the reasonable price of 2,900 yen, it offers a diverse menu of Japanese, Western, and Chinese dishes, plus sweets, all centered around a creative theme. During our visit, the "Halloween Lunch Buffet" (running until October 26, 2025) was in full swing.

The Halloween buffet feels extra special, with visually striking dishes like a pumpkin salad decorated with a ghost and a startlingly fun zombie-faced seared tuna (served over rice). Of course, the taste is just as carefully crafted. The hotel chefs create delicate and gentle dishes, with flavors that are not too strong, allowing the natural taste of the ingredients to shine through, so you never get tired of eating.

The live cooking station, where chefs prepare dishes right in front of you, features incredible omelets made with professional skill! You can choose from seven different toppings, including cheese, bacon, cod roe, and green onions. The Halloween menu also offered two sauces: tomato and squid ink. Watching the chef's performance as they quickly cook the eggs and plate them is part of the fun. Be sure to savor a freshly made omelet that comes together in an instant.

Another great feature is the nigiri sushi, a rare find at a lunch buffet in the 2,000-yen price range. The day's offerings were lean tuna and whelk. For other Japanese dishes, there was a fish ball soup with Atka mackerel and a make-your-own udon station with toppings like green onions. The buffet also boasts a rich variety of Western and Chinese dishes.

When you think of Chateraise, you think of their highly-praised sweets! Many repeat customers come just for this. The dessert corner features a stunning lineup of over 10 types of Chateraise's signature sweets. The slices are generous, but the cakes are so light and not overly sweet that you can just keep eating. Be warned: don't fill up too much on the savory dishes, or you won't have room for dessert!

Living up to its motto of being a "family-friendly resort," the hotel offers outstanding services for children, a feature that sets it apart. The kids' corner is stocked with cute children's plates and cutlery, and of course, high chairs are available. Strollers are also welcome. Notably, they offer free rental of baby cribs and provide baby food appropriate for different ages, also free of charge. There's even a nursing space within the restaurant, so parents with infants can enjoy the buffet without worry.

Kid-favorite dishes like fried chicken and hamburgers are available in mini sizes.

With such a strong focus on desserts, the drinks are also thoughtfully selected to complement them. In addition to coffee and tea, you'll find honey lemon, natural water from the Daisetsuzan mountains, and Hokkaido-produced milk—they've thought of everything. There are juices too, so kids will be delighted.

While the "Halloween Lunch Buffet" runs until October 26, 2025, the Western Cuisine Lunch Buffet from November 1, 2025, to January 12, 2026, will continue to feature the live omelet station, sushi, and all-you-can-eat Chateraise sweets, but with a brand-new lineup of meat and fish dishes. A major perk of this place is that you can enjoy the onsen (hot springs) and pool along with your lunch buffet. The indoor heated pool is open year-round, so you can use it even in winter. Both the baths and the pool are designed for everyone from infants to adults, making it highly recommended for families. While getting there by car is convenient, free shuttle buses run from JR Sapporo Station and Asabu Station on the Subway Namboku Line, so it's easily accessible even if you don't drive.
