Tokachi Ranch is located about 30 minutes by car from JR Obihiro Station. It's a popular spot with tourists as you can find many photogenic landscapes, but one of the most recommended is the Tokachi Ranch Birch Tree Line. Everyone will surely be enchanted by this romantic and fantastical sight! As you enter the road to Tokachi Ranch from Route 133 (Otokuninushitoku Line), you will immediately see a row of birch trees. Birch trees are a familiar tree in Hokkaido, but the sight of them neatly lined up on both sides of the road for about 1.3 km is a spectacular sight. You will feel as if you have wandered into the world of a picture book, giving you a slightly extraordinary experience. At its peak, the birch avenue had as many as 660 trees, but many of them have outlived their lifespan, so a 10-year restoration project has been underway since 2014. The plan is to replace the severely damaged birch trees with new ones, and so far, 277 trees have been cut down and 88 seedlings have been planted (as of April 2021). The birch tree line is expected to eventually number around 340 to 350 trees. This beautiful landscape, which has also been used as a filming location for movies and TV dramas, is being carefully preserved by hand. The pure white trunks of birch trees stand out against the fresh greenery of early summer and blend into the snowy scenery of midwinter.
