"Looks Delicious!" Is That a Corn Dog? This Adorable Seal in Mombetsu Is a Viral Sensation for Its "Perfect Resemblance"

A seal living at the Okhotsk Tokkari Center "Azarashi Land," a specialized seal sanctuary in Mombetsu, Hokkaido, has become a hot topic for its striking resemblance to a certain food. What exactly does it look like?

I thought it looked like something... but it wasn't until the flight home that I finally figured it out.

Its plump, round form and outstretched hind flippers... it looks just like a corn dog! The post went viral, garnering over 56,000 likes on social media with comments like, "It's a swimming corn dog," "Even the crispy bits on the stick are perfectly recreated!" and "So round and cute."

Seal Enthusiast Kao on the Charms of the Tokkari Center

The person who posted the photos is Kao, a self-proclaimed "Azarer" (a Japanese term for a seal enthusiast). The adorable corn dog-like seal in the picture is Tsuki-chan, who was born at the Tokkari Center this March.

According to Kao, the charm of the Tokkari Center lies in its up-close-and-personal outdoor setting. You can observe the seals more intimately, hearing their calls, the splash of water, smelling the air, and seeing how their fur changes day by day. Another major draw is the opportunity to learn more about the seals' individual personalities and behaviors through the keepers' detailed explanations during feeding times and husbandry training (*).

Don't Miss the Banter Between the Seals and Their Keepers

The seals living at the Tokkari Center are full of expression. While they often show adorable gestures and playful moments that bring a smile to your face, they can also show a stubborn side, sometimes giving their keepers a hard time.

"The playful interactions between the seals and their keepers are part of the unique warmth of this place," says Kao. If you find yourself in Mombetsu, why not stop by the Tokkari Center to experience this heartwarming atmosphere for yourself?
