It is a well-known fact to the people of Hokkaido that there used to be many coal mines in various parts of the island. However, not many people know what the actual coal mines were like.

The Old Pacific Coal Mine Exhibition Hall (hereafter referred to as "Coal Mine Exhibition Hall") in Kushiro City is a good place to start. The exhibition hall is a sightseeing spot with realistic mock-up tunnels and other powerful exhibits that are sure to enthrall both children and adults alike.

Many coal mines were closed over time. Among such mines in Hokkaido, Taiheiyo Coal Mine in Kushiro was the last one to continue production. The Coal Mine Exhibition Hall was built on the site of the former Taiheiyo Coal Mine.
The first thing that catches the eye upon entering the museum is the largest lump of coal in Japan. The black, shiny lump of coal is said to be enough for two winters of household fuel in Kushiro City. In the domed exhibition hall beyond the entrance, visitors can learn all about coal, including its origins and how it was commercialized.
After passing through the exhibition hall and descending the stairs, visitors will find themselves on the floor of a simulated mine. The reality of the actual mine is enhanced by the fact that it is a reproduction of an actual standard mine shaft. Of course, all of the machinery in the exhibit is the same as what was actually used in the mines. You will feel as if you were back in time to the days when coal mining flourished as one of Kushiro's three core industries.
The Coal Mine Exhibition Hall was built in the hope that people would take a closer look at the coal mines, which people are forgetting about. Even if you have no knowledge of coal mining, you will surely be intrigued by the powerful exhibits. Why not visit when you come to Kushiro?
