The impressive "Former Pacific Coal Mine Coal Mine Exhibition Hall" lets you learn about history while also touching actual lump coal and machinery!
As time passed, many coal mines were forced to close. Among the coal mines in Hokkaido, the last one to continue production was the Pacific Coal Mine in Kushiro. A coal mine exhibition hall is currently being built in one area of the former Pacific Coal Mine site.
The first thing that catches your eye when you enter the museum is the largest lump of coal in Japan. The shining black lump of coal sits there and is amazingly large enough to last two winters if used as household fuel in Kushiro city. In the dome-shaped exhibition hall beyond the entrance, you can learn all sorts of things about coal, such as its origins and the process it goes through before it is commercialized.
After passing through the exhibition hall and going down the stairs, you will arrive at the mock mine tunnel floor. It is a replica of a full-scale mine tunnel, which adds to the realism. Of course, all the machines displayed here were actually used in the mines. You will feel as if you have traveled back in time to the time when coal mining flourished as one of Kushiro's three major industries.
The reason this coal mine museum was built was because they wanted people to pay attention to coal mines, which people are gradually forgetting. Even if you don't know anything about coal mines, you'll definitely be interested when you see the impressive exhibits. If you're in Kushiro, why not stop by?
