"The horses look so happy!" It's not just dogs that get excited about heavy snow! These horses frolicking in the snow are just too cute, or "namara menkoi" as they say in Hokkaido!
The heavy snowfall from yesterday has made the riding ground fluffy and soft, and the horses are having a blast❄️
Snow removal took over 5 hours😇
I spend more time on the heavy machinery than riding.

The video shows horses wildly running and playing in the freshly fallen, fluffy snow! They kick their hind legs high, stomp through the snow, and dash around, looking like they're having the time of their lives. The post has received about 10,000 likes, with comments like, "The horses look so happy," "I didn't know horses enjoyed the snow too," and "Namara menkoi (So incredibly cute in Hokkaido dialect)."
A Day of Heavy Snow at Makomanai Riding Club in Minami Ward, Sapporo

This took place at the Makomanai Riding Club in Minami Ward, Sapporo. The post captures a day in December when Sapporo was hit by heavy snow. The two horses having fun are Eikai Royal and Schwarzberg. Eikai Royal is a talented show jumper who won the Hokkaido tournament of the RRC (Retired Racehorse Cup), a competition exclusively for retired racehorses, in 2025, and even competed in the national championships.
The other horse, Schwarzberg, is only two years old and is just beginning his training as a riding horse. However, the staff member in charge said, "He shows movements that suggest great potential, so I believe he will also excel in equestrian sports!"
Schwarzberg, who has a friendly, honest, and playful personality.
The Makomanai Riding Club is currently home to 24 horses, 20 of which are retired racehorses. After retiring from the world of horse racing, they start a new life here, interacting with people through riding and lessons. It's also possible to visit just to see the horses by making a reservation in advance via DM on the Makomanai Riding Club's X or Instagram accounts! You can even bring carrots to feed the horses, and getting to interact with them up close is a wonderful bonus.
If you're interested, why not visit the Makomanai Riding Club, where you can meet horses right in Sapporo?
