"A Must-Try Experience?" ¥7,500 for a Single Piece of Sushi?! The "Phantom Shrimp" at New Chitose Airport Goes Viral
I accidentally ordered a piece of sushi that cost 7,500 yen 🍣
I was at a standing sushi bar at the airport for a snack and ordered some shrimp. The chef said, "This will take a little time, is that alright?" and "Would you like to take a picture before I make it?" I felt something was off, like why was he being so unusually polite just for this one piece.🥺
Turns out it was the phantom shrimp, Budo Ebi from Rausu.

It's sushi made with "Budo Ebi" (Grape Shrimp), a rare shrimp with such a small catch that it's called the "phantom shrimp"! The shocking price of 7,500 yen for a single piece sparked a huge reaction on social media, with comments like, "It has the look of something worth 7,500 yen," and "I want to try it at least once," garnering over 120,000 likes.
An Incident at New Chitose Airport, a Hub of Hokkaido Gourmet
The person who posted this, Yosisyun, traveled from Osaka to Hokkaido just to explore the gourmet food at New Chitose Airport. They stayed one night at a hotel directly connected to the airport and enjoyed Hokkaido's culinary delights with their family.
The airport gourmet experience Yosisyun's family enjoyed. New Chitose Airport is packed with delicious spots!
So, How Did the 7,500 Yen "Phantom Shrimp" Taste?
Yosisyun ate the Rausu Budo Ebi at "Sapporo Uogashi Gojushichiban-zushi," a standing sushi bar inside the airport. They mistakenly ordered it, thinking it was 750 yen, and were shocked to realize the price was one digit off just moments before it was served. We asked Yosisyun what it was actually like.
I feel really bad saying this, but I was too shocked by the price to even taste it! (laughs)
If I had known the price when I ordered, I might have been mentally prepared for it, but since it was such an unexpectedly luxurious ingredient, the shock outweighed the deliciousness.
While I couldn't really taste the shrimp due to the shock, the other sushi toppings were superb. Personally, I thought the lean tuna was the best, and it really lived up to the restaurant's popular reputation.
Besides the Budo Ebi, there's plenty of other exquisite sushi!

"An Unforgettable Trip": A Gourmet Journey Enjoying New Chitose Airport
"Our family of four was completely satisfied just within the airport," and "The post unexpectedly went viral, making it an unforgettable trip," Yosisyun shared. It seems there are still many more hidden, attractive local ingredients to be discovered at New Chitose Airport, a place where all of Hokkaido's gourmet food comes together.
