"I Have to Try This Once!" – Voices of Surprise at the 7,500 Yen "Phantom Shrimp" Sushi at New Chitose Airport
I accidentally ordered a piece of sushi that cost 7,500 yen 🍣
I was having some standing sushi as a snack at the airport and ordered some shrimp. The chef said to me, "It will take a little time, is that alright?" and "Would you like to take a picture before I make it?" I felt it was strange how incredibly polite he was being just for this one piece 🥺
Turns out it was the phantom shrimp, Budo Ebi from Rausu.
Quoted from @yossssina's post
It was sushi made with "Budo Ebi" (grape shrimp), a crustacean so rarely caught it's called the "phantom shrimp"! The shocking price of 7,500 yen for a single piece caused a stir on social media, with comments like, "That shrimp has the face of a 7,500 yen shrimp," and "I want to try it at least once." The post received over 120,000 likes.
An Incident at New Chitose Airport, a Hub for Hokkaido's Gourmet Delights
The person who posted this was Yosisyun, who traveled from Osaka to Hokkaido just to explore the gourmet offerings at New Chitose Airport. They stayed one night at a hotel directly connected to the airport and enjoyed Hokkaido's cuisine with their family right inside the airport.
The airport gourmet feast Yosisyun's family enjoyed. New Chitose Airport is packed with delicious spots!
So, How Did the 7,500 Yen "Phantom Shrimp" Taste?
Yosisyun ate the Rausu Budo Ebi at "Sapporo Uogashi Gojushichiban-zushi," a standing sushi bar inside the airport. They mistakenly ordered it, thinking it was 750 yen, and were shocked to realize the price was one digit off just seconds before it was served. We asked Yosisyun directly about the taste.
I'm truly sorry to say this, but I was so shocked by the price that I couldn't even taste it, lol.
If I had known the price beforehand, I might have been prepared for it, but since it was such a surprise luxury ingredient, the shock outweighed the deliciousness.
I couldn't taste the shrimp because I was too surprised, but the other sushi toppings were superb. Personally, I thought the tuna (akami) was the best, which is just what you'd expect from such a popular restaurant.
Besides the Budo Ebi, there's plenty of other exquisite sushi!

"An Unforgettable Trip": A Gourmet Journey Enjoying New Chitose Airport
"Just staying within the airport was enough to satisfy my family of four," and "The unexpected viral post made it an unforgettable trip," Yosisyun shared. It seems New Chitose Airport, a hub for Hokkaido's culinary treasures, still has many more fascinating local ingredients waiting to be discovered.
