"So Nostalgic..." These "Time-Capsule" Ad Billboards Near Sapporo Station Are Incredibly Evocative

Did you know there's a display near Sapporo Station where time seems to have stood still? A collection of nostalgic ad billboards left in an underpass, conveying the scenery of old Sapporo, has become a hot topic.

In the underpass at the north exit of Sapporo Station, there are ad billboards that seem frozen in the 1990s, and I absolutely love them. The photo of the second-generation Nikka billboard in Susukino is especially precious!

This underpass is located just outside the north exit of JR Sapporo Station. In this easily overlooked spot, "another Sapporo" remains, compelling you to stop in your tracks. Lining the walls are numerous ad billboards, seemingly preserved as they were back in the day. They depict scenes like the former Susukino intersection and landscapes that were once beloved symbols of the city.

For example, you'll find the "second-generation Nikka billboard," which was displayed until 2005, and the "National" logo that once sat below the clock on the Sapporo TV Tower. Furthermore, there's the now-vanished Takugin (Hokkaido Takushoku Bank) building. Memories of a Sapporo that can no longer be seen are lined up as if they were cut out and preserved in time.

Despite being in the heart of Sapporo, an area undergoing constant development, this place feels like a mysterious space left behind. The post has garnered much sympathy, with comments like "So nostalgic" from those who remember Sapporo from that era.

What Scenery Left an Impression on City-Walking Researcher "Burasatoru"?

The person who shared this post is Satoru Wada, also known as "Burasatoru," a city-walking researcher active in the media. Among the many billboards, he says the one that left the biggest impression on him was the "scenery of Susukino."

The old Nikka and Kirin Beer billboards, the old clock tower, Robinson's Department Store, the Nikon rooftop ad—it's all nostalgic scenery for someone like me who used to live along the streetcar line (it was the last stop, and I'd look up at it every day on my way to work). It brings back personal memories from the late 1990s when I was just starting my career.
