Cute omikuji and red seal book! Peace of mind at the lush green "Obihiro Shrine
The history of Obihiro Shrine dates back to the Meiji Era. There is a record of a festival held in front of the shrine, which was called Obihiro Shrine, in the early days of the pioneering period (......). In 1910, the shrine received the spirit of a branch from Sapporo Shrine (now Hokkaido Jingu Shrine), and is designated as an annexed shrine. The current shrine was built in 1979.
What will surprise you when you actually visit the shrine is its size. It is the fifth largest shrine in Hokkaido, covering an area of approximately 10,000 tsubo. In 1974, it was designated as an environmental green zone in Hokkaido. Just standing in the lush green precincts of the shrine seems to purify the mind.
The nature-rich Obihiro Shrine is home to large-diameter trees such as haru elm, walnut, and katsura. It is also home to many wild birds and small animals, and if you are lucky, you may even see the popular striped egrets. If you don't get to see them, don't be discouraged! In that case, we recommend the red seal book of Obihiro Shrine. It has a very cute striped eagle pattern.
In addition, the original omikuji (fortune) that comes with a zebra mascot is also cute and well received.
Speaking of omikuji, we also recommend the "Ezomikuji" series of Hokkaido local mikuji. The unique Ezomikuji written in Hokkaido dialect is popular as a souvenir, and here at Obihiro Shrine, it comes with a mascot featuring Obihiro's specialty, salmon.
Since the Meiji era, Obihiro Shrine has been well known by the locals along with the development of the city of Obihiro. It is quite pleasant to visit the shrine while surrounded by rich nature. Even if you are visiting for sightseeing, you will surely be refreshed from the fatigue of your trip. Of course, don't forget to pick up a cute omikuji or a red seal book!
