For the people of Obihiro, Obihiro Shrine is one that everyone has visited at least once. In a way, it is like Hokkaido Shrine is for the people of Sapporo. People who visit Obihiro as a tourist may not think of going to Obihiro Shrine, but there are actually several points that you should stop by during your trip. I'm sure you will find it soothing.
The history of Obihiro Shrine dates back to the Meiji period. There are records that show that shortly after the area was developed, a festival was held in front of a small shrine called Obihiro Shrine. In 1910, the shrine was granted a branch of the deity from Sapporo Shrine (now Hokkaido Shrine), and it is a prestigious shrine that has also been selected as a special shrine. The current shrine building was built in 1979.
What will surprise you when you actually visit is its size. It is the fifth largest shrine in Hokkaido, covering an area of approximately 33,000 square meters. In 1974, it was designated as an environmental green space conservation area by Hokkaido. Just standing in the lush grounds is enough to purify your soul.

Obihiro Shrine is surrounded by nature, and large trees such as Japanese elm, walnut, and katsura grow there. There are also many wild birds and small animals, and if you're lucky, you might even encounter the popular Japanese long-tailed tit. But don't be disappointed if you don't see one! In that case, we recommend the Obihiro Shrine goshuincho (stamp book). It has a very cute Japanese long-tailed tit pattern.
The original fortune slips, which come with a long-tailed tit mascot, are also very cute and popular.
Speaking of fortunes, we also recommend the Hokkaido local fortune series "Ezo Mikuji." The unique Ezo Mikuji written in the Hokkaido dialect is popular as a souvenir, and at Obihiro Shrine, it comes with a mascot with a salmon motif, a specialty of Obihiro.
Since the Meiji era, Obihiro Shrine has been loved by locals along with the development of the city of Obihiro. It is quite pleasant to visit the shrine surrounded by rich nature. Tourists who visit the shrine will surely be able to refresh themselves after a long journey. Of course, don't forget to enjoy the cute fortune slips and goshuincho (stamp books)!
