Pippu Town

This is the third installment of Domingo's monthly collaboration project with towns in Hokkaido, and this time we're focusing on Pippu Town!
For four weeks, we'll be bringing you information on how to enjoy the town and its special local products.

In Hokkaido, September is a time when the air becomes clearer, and the colors of the fields and mountains gradually shift to gentler hues. With the arrival of autumn, a season for hearty appetites and cultural pursuits, many people are likely heading out for drives in search of delicious food, sweets, and stunning scenery.

For those people, we recommend Pippu Town, located right next to Asahikawa City.

This time, we'll introduce Pippu Town, a perfect destination for a drive to enjoy spectacular views and delicious food.

1. What kind of town is Pippu?

Pippu Town is located in the Kamikawa Basin, near the center of Hokkaido.

With a population of about 3,560 (as of July 2021), the town shows different faces with each season, offering strawberry picking in the summer and skiing in the winter.

Its main industry is agriculture, with rice cultivation being particularly prosperous. From mid to late August, you can see the vast rice paddies shining in a golden color.
Surprisingly, "Yumepirika," the star of Hokkaido rice, was actually born in Pippu Town. It was created at the Kamikawa Agricultural Experiment Station in the town, born from the passionate desire of researchers to grow delicious rice even in cold regions.

This time, we'll introduce a driving route and spots to fully enjoy the scenery and food of Pippu Town!

3. Detour-worthy spots to explore Pippu's delicious offerings!

As mentioned at the beginning, Pippu's main industry is agriculture. In addition to delicious rice, various farmers produce strawberries in the summer, daikon radish, pumpkin, and corn, and from autumn, cucumbers and mizuna greens. From winter to spring, they grow senbon-negi (a type of green onion), and year-round, they cultivate maitake, nameko, and wood ear mushrooms.
Furthermore, Pippu Town is home to a poultry farm that produces a brand of eggs called "Kappa no Kenran," making it a treasure trove of food.

Here are some recommended detour spots for your drive in Pippu Town.

A pastry shop opened with the desire to promote Pippu's specialty strawberries.
The cakes are carefully and lovingly made one by one by the manager, Kaori, who honed her skills as a pastry chef at famous shops for over 10 years.
All the cakes sold at Ichigo to Kaori to Yogashiten feature Pippu's famous strawberries as the star. To fully enjoy the sweetness, acidity, and aroma of the strawberries, the cakes have a refined taste with reduced sweetness.
Their top recommendation is the "Strawberry Roll Cake made with Rice Flour / 450 yen (tax excl.)."

*From around November to April, they use the rare winter strawberry 'Benihoppe,' which they started cultivating this season.
They also use 'Yumepirika,' a specially cultivated rice from their own farm with a 50% reduction in pesticide use, which gives the cake a fluffy, chewy, and gentle flavor.
