[Preparation] 3 Key Points to Enjoy Your Hokkaido Trip to the Fullest
To enjoy your trip to the fullest, let's start with the “smart way to move” from the airport.
Reserved Seats on the JR Rapid Airport are Recommended for Travel
When heading from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo or Otaru with a large suitcase, it's highly recommended to book a “u-seat (reserved seat)” for an additional fee. Not only does it have a dedicated luggage space, but the biggest advantage is that you can focus on the stunning scenery outside the window without worrying about whether you'll get a seat.
Your Flight is the Best “Prep Time”
This itinerary features locations from numerous famous works. Just watching one episode of Netflix's 'First Love' on the plane will significantly boost your excitement when you land in Sapporo. We hope you get to experience the thrill of thinking, “Ah, this is from that scene!” right there on the spot.
Choosing “Winter Shoes” Can Make or Break Your Trip (November–March)
If you're visiting in winter, shoes with non-slip soles are your only option. The roads in Hokkaido are so slippery that even locals can lose their footing if they're not careful. If you're unsure about your shoes, consider using “attachable spikes” sold at convenience stores in train stations. They will make walking surprisingly easier and more secure.
[Day 1] Sapporo: Immerse Yourself in Modernity, History, and the Scenery of “First Love”
12:00 PM Arrive in Sapporo. Welcome Yourself with a Bowl of Ramen
Once you step off the train at Sapporo Station and feel the crisp air, it's time for lunch. What better way to kick off your Hokkaido journey than with a steaming bowl of Sapporo miso ramen? One sip of the rich broth will make you feel, “I'm really in Hokkaido.”
The signature dish at Sapporo's famed Ramen Shingen, "Shinshu (Rich Miso)," for 1,050 yen (tax included)
The city is packed with everything from famous shops with constant lines to hidden gems loved by locals. If you're willing to venture a little further, the super-famous 'Ramen Shingen' in the Susukino area is a must-visit. Many fans line up daily for its rich, secret miso broth. Even the time spent wondering which shop's noren curtain to pass through is part of the fun prologue to your trip.
2:00 PM City Pilgrimage. Walk Through the Stages of Stories
Odori Park has a different atmosphere during the day and at night
The night view of Sapporo from the Sapporo TV Tower observation deck is also a must-see!
After a satisfying meal, it's time to explore the city. Central Sapporo is dotted with spots that evoke memories of movies and anime.
First, head to Sapporo's symbols, Odori Park and the TV Tower. This location was featured prominently in the drama 'First Love.' Looking out over the city from the observation deck might help you feel the same atmosphere as the main characters did.
Tips: The moment when the sunset and city lights blend is the best “magic hour” for photographing the TV Tower.
Going a bit further, a visit to the 'Historical Village of Hokkaido' is also recommended. Many of the buildings used as filming locations for the movie 'Golden Kamuy,' based on the popular manga, have been relocated and preserved here. Step inside, and you'll feel as if you've time-traveled to the Meiji and Taisho eras.
Even if you're not a fan of the series, the beauty of these historical buildings is sure to be overwhelming.
6:00 PM Dinner: Sapporo's “Big 3 Soul Foods.” What's Your Order Tonight?
When it comes to enjoying Sapporo, you can't miss the food!
Deciding what to eat on a Sapporo night is a luxurious dilemma. Here are the three great gourmet dishes that Sapporo boasts, which we absolutely recommend for first-timers.
■ Genghis Khan (Jingisukan): Lamb grilled on a special iron skillet. High-quality lamb has no gamey taste at all, and the Hokkaido style is to devour it with plenty of vegetables.
■ Soup Curry: A local “soul food” you can't miss when in Sapporo. A thin, spicy soup filled with a large piece of chicken and chunks of deep-fried vegetables. One bite will surely change your concept of curry.
■ Conveyor Belt Sushi: The honest opinion of locals is, “The conveyor belt sushi in Sapporo is on another level!” The toppings, delivered straight from the port, are surprisingly thick and fresh. You'll be amazed and think, “Is this really conveyor belt sushi?”
8:00 PM The Way to End a Sapporo Night is with a “Shime Parfait”
The “Shime Parfait” has been featured in various media and is a hot topic.
Even if you're full, there's always room for this. The connoisseur's way to end the day is with a “Shime Parfait,” a unique Sapporo culture of “finishing” with a sweet parfait after drinks. Reflect on the first day of your trip with a parfait that looks like a work of art.
The super-popular shop near Odori Park that sparked the “Shime Parfait” culture is 'Parfait, Coffee, Sake, Sato'.
There's always a line at 'Parfait, Coffee, Sake, Sato,' but it can be easier to get in on weekday afternoons.
The stylish interior is spacious, with calm counter seats and a limited-time outdoor terrace in the summer. You can enjoy pairings with their signature “Salted Caramel and Pistachio” parfait, as well as with alcoholic drinks and coffee.
[Day 2] Otaru: A Nostalgic Townscape, the Canal, and Movie Memories
9:00 AM Head to Otaru. Keep an Eye on the Right-Side Window!
On the second day, head to Otaru, the setting of the movie 'Love Letter' and a city known for its nostalgic townscape. When taking the JR Rapid Airport to Otaru, try to choose a seat on the “right side” in the direction of travel. Just after passing Zenibako Station, a magnificent view of Ishikari Bay will unfold before your eyes.
10:30 AM Sankaku Market. A Bowl Full of the Morning Market's Energy
'Sankaku Market,' the “kitchen of Otaru” where fresh seafood gathers.
Located right next to Otaru Station, 'Sankaku Market' is truly the kitchen of Otaru. Lured by the lively voices of the shopkeepers, enjoy a seafood bowl topped with as much freshly caught seafood as you like. One bite will give you a sense of the port town Otaru's true power.
12:30 PM Stroll Along Sakaimachi Street & Otaru Canal. Shopping in a Sepia-Toned Town
The 'Otaru Canal,' a charming and iconic spot unique to Otaru.
The canal, lined with retro stone warehouses, is a perfect photo spot. First, take a commemorative photo with the canal shining in the daylight as your backdrop. The movie 'Love Letter' was also filmed nearby. Just a short walk away is “Sakaimachi Street,” the main street for souvenir shopping. LeTAO's cheesecake, Kitaichi Glass's beautiful glassware, and Rokkatei's butter sand cookies. Get your hands on high-quality Hokkaido brands with ease.
4:00 PM–6:00 PM Sushiya-dori Street. The “Taste of Otaru” Shining with a Chef's Skill
Otaru is home to famous sushi restaurants like 'Masazushi Main Store'.
As evening approaches, head to “Sushiya-dori Street” for an early dinner. Since you're in the port town of Otaru, you can't miss sushi crafted with soul, one piece at a time, by a master chef. Savoring the best local catch of the season at the counter is an exceptional experience.
8:00 PM Otaru Canal Light-Up. A Fantastical Look, Different from Daytime
The 'Otaru Canal' at night has a very magical atmosphere.
After your meal, return to the canal. At night, the gas lamps are lit, and the atmosphere transforms from the daytime bustle to one of silence and fantasy. Gaze at the shimmering reflections of light on the water's surface and immerse yourself in the nostalgic Otaru night.
Tips: Staying warm along the canal in winter.
The wind from the sea is strong along the canal at night, and the wind chill can drop well below freezing. To enjoy your stroll, a thick coat, scarf, gloves, and a “beanie that covers your ears” are essential. Also, tucking a heat pack on your back or in your shoes will give you the comfort to fully enjoy the night view.
4. [Day 3] Sapporo & New Chitose Airport: The Grand Finale of Your Trip is at the Airport
8:00 AM Morning Activity at Nijo Market. Experience the Tastes of the North, like Crab and Melon
'Nijo Market' is located in the city center, close to Tanukikoji and Susukino.
On the final day, leave Otaru and head back to Sapporo. Sapporo is conveniently located between Otaru and New Chitose Airport, making it an easy stop. A great place to visit in the morning is 'Nijo Market,' which you can pop into while strolling through the city. Enjoy seasonal delicacies like crab and melon. If you have extra time and want to experience a larger market, you can venture a bit further to the 'Sapporo Central Wholesale Market Curb Market'.
10:00 AM Final Souvenir Shopping at Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade
The place to buy souvenirs! The covered 'Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade' is safe from rain and snow.
Before heading to the airport, don't forget to stop by the Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade. This area, lined with drugstores and a “Don Quijote,” is perfect for buying souvenirs in bulk for friends and colleagues. It offers a wider variety and more reasonable prices than the airport. By finishing your shopping here, you can focus on treats for yourself and gourmet food at the airport, making better use of your time.
1:00 PM Conquer New Chitose Airport (Plan for at least 4 hours!)
'New Chitose Airport' is filled with Hokkaido's unique food, experiences, and souvenirs.
New Chitose Airport is not just a transit point. It's a massive shopping mall and theme park—a “spot to be fully enjoyed.” There's so much to see that we strongly recommend arriving at least 4 hours before your departure!
■ Hokkaido Ramen Dojo: The last bowl of your trip: At this place where famous ramen shops from all over Hokkaido gather, savor every last drop while reminiscing about your journey. One of the most popular is 'Ebisoba Ichigen.' The ramen, rich with the flavor of shrimp, is unique to this shop. This is the perfect way to cap off your Hokkaido trip.
■ Final Souvenir Run at the Domestic Terminal Shops: This area has everything from classic items to the latest sweets. If you forgot to buy something at Tanukikoji, you can cover it all here.
■ Snow Miku Sky Town: A commercial complex for “Snow Miku (Hatsune Miku),” the character that supports Hokkaido. The shop, where you can buy exclusive items like the 'Hokkaido Snow Miku Chocolate Cookie,' and the museum, which features a life-sized statue of Snow Miku, are must-sees.
