Otaru City is located roughly in the center of Hokkaido's west coast, on the eastern side of the Shiribeshi region, and borders four municipalities, including Sapporo. The city spans approximately 36 km from east to west and 20 km from north to south. It is a town of many slopes, with one side of its urban area facing the Sea of Japan and the other three sides surrounded by mountains. The coastline is about 69 km long, with the natural harbor of Otaru Port at its center. The magnificent western coastline is designated as the "Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park."
For Hokkaido, the climate is maritime with small temperature variations, making it a comfortable place to live. You can enjoy the rich nature throughout the four seasons: cherry blossoms and fresh greenery in spring, golf and marine leisure in summer, autumn foliage in fall, and skiing in winter. The city's flower is the azalea, the city's tree is the white birch, and the city's bird is the Japanese green pigeon.
Otaru has sister city relationships with Nakhodka, Russia; Dunedin, New Zealand; and Gangseo-gu, Seoul, South Korea. In September 2016, the city celebrated the 50th anniversary of its sister city relationship with Nakhodka.
