Otaru City

If you are not a Hokkaido-native, the term "deep-fried fish paste" may not ring a bell. In some regions, it is called "satsuma-age" or "tempura," and is made by kneading fish paste and deep frying it. In this article, we would like to introduce you to a long-established store that serves such deep-fried fish paste.

Kamaei" in Otaru is a well-known brand among Hokkaido residents. Founded in 1905, it is now sold not only in stores in Otaru but also in department stores in Sapporo and at the New Chitose Airport.
Kamasakae offers about 70 different products. The ingredients are mainly fish from nearby seas and are made without using any preservatives, so they are safe and secure. On the other hand, it is also important to note that it does not last that long. We also do not recommend freezing them as the flavor will be lost.
Furthermore, some products such as chikuwa and kamaboko can be vacuum-packed for local delivery, but most of the deep-fried kamaboko introduced here can only be kept refrigerated for about 3 days, so they are not suitable for local delivery. This means that you have to go directly to the place where they are sold to eat them.
Kamaei is located right in front of the Otaru Canal and is a factory-direct store, where you can watch skilled craftsmen making the kamaboko by hand. The fish cakes are formed and steamed at the factory, and then delivered to the stores, where they are deep-fried and sold at each location. Let's check out some of their special deep-fried fish paste.
The most popular item is the Hiraten (194 yen including tax). The factory produces around 10,000 pieces a day.
The "Miso Nanban" (172 yen including tax) is a great snack. It is said that this is also a very popular item.
The "Wiener Roll" (237 yen including tax), which is only available at this Otaru factory-direct store, is also very popular with children!
This "Pandome" (237 yen including tax) is another popular item available only here. If you visit Otaru, why not stop by the factory store between sightseeing to purchase some.

Kamakae's deep-fried fish paste is a taste of Hokkaido that you should try in Otaru because it is not shipped to the rest of Japan.
