There are countless parks in Sapporo, some famous and visited by tourists and others with long walking paths, varying in size and use. This time, we would like to introduce "Seishin Kohan Park" among them. It is a park that is quite popular if you know about it!

Seishin Kohan Park is a long and narrow park along the Seishin River that runs between Nakanoshima and Hirakishi in Toyohira-ku. From Minamiheigan Station on the Namboku Subway Line, walk along Shiraishi/Moiwa Dori toward Mt. Moiwa, and you will see the entrance to the park in about 10 minutes. The landmark is a sign that reads "Seishin Riverside Park.
The Seishin River has been selected as one of the "Sapporo Hometown Culture 100" and the "JSCE Design Award" for excellence, and there are no concrete revetments. Walking along this beautiful river in its natural state, you will feel the babbling of the waterside, the sunlight filtering through the trees, and the scent of deep greenery, sharpening your senses.
The park is surrounded by residential neighborhoods, with busy roads at its entrance and exit, but there is a strange sense of peacefulness, as if you are cut off from such hustle and bustle.
The Seishin Kohan Park, with a 900-meter walkway each way across the river, is tinted in different hues each season: cherry blossoms in spring, gingko trees in fall, and so on. In winter, the path is deep in snow, making it difficult to walk, but it is well known as a walking course by neighbors, so just follow the footsteps of others and you will be fine.
Also, if you look into the Shojin River during the early fall season, you may be able to see a cherry salmon run. To come across such a scene in a place surrounded by residential areas is indeed Hokkaido!
There is also a waterfall, albeit a small one, at the Seishin Riverside Park. If you go up the stairs by this waterfall, you will come to the Tenjinyama green area on the immediate side.
If you enter Seishin Kohan Park from the entrance on the waterfall side, the nearest station is Sumikawa Station on the Namboku Subway Line. Once again, it is surprising to find a park with such abundant nature just a short walk from the subway station.

You will surely be able to relax and refresh yourself when you want to escape from the trivialities of daily life.
