Yukura Shrine is located at the entrance to the hot spring town of Yunokawa Onsen, a popular spot in Hakodate. Although it is a historic shrine built in the birthplace of hot springs, it also has many features that make it accessible to young people! Let's take a look at the intriguing Yukura Shrine. More than 360 years ago, when Takahiro, the lord of the Matsumae clan, suffered from an incurable disease as a child, he followed his mother's advice and bathed in the hot springs, where he recovered. It is said that Yukura Shrine was officially founded when a crocodile bell was dedicated as a token of gratitude. However, according to legend, the origins date back more than 500 years, so there is no doubt that it is a shrine with a very long history. As you enter the temple grounds, you'll come across a large tree that really catches your eye. It's a yew tree that's said to be about 370 years old, making it the oldest tree in Yukawa. Just by approaching it, you can feel its power. The rabbit enshrined in front of the shrine is also quite eye-catching. The deity of Yukura Shrine, Okuninushi-no-Mikoto, and rabbits have a deep connection, as seen in the myth "The White Rabbit of Inaba." The sacred rabbit, installed in 2014 to commemorate the 360th anniversary of the shrine's founding, is affectionately known as the "Nade-Usagi" (petting rabbit), and visitors are said to pet it in hopes of receiving divine protection. Well, Yukura Shrine has the Hokkaido local fortune-telling series "Ezo Mikuji". Ezo Mikuji is a unique and fun fortune-telling slip with a motif of local specialties. Speaking of Hakodate's specialties...? Yes, it's a squid. It's called "Ikasu Omikuji". The Ezo Omikuji is written in Hokkaido dialect, and it's funny to read. It also comes with such a cute mascot, so you'll want to try it out! Another popular item at Yukura Shrine is the adorable "Goshinen Omamori (Charms for Divine Encounters)." You can choose from five different pouches and string colors, and place up to three uchifu inside. Each uchifu has a single kanji character representing something you wish for to come true, and there are 12 different types in total. Being able to customize your own charms is sure to get you excited. They would make great souvenirs, as well as personal items. A shrine with such a long history may sound intimidating, but Yukura Shrine is a great place to enjoy a power spot! Why not add it to your Hakodate sightseeing plans? <Yukura Shrine> Address: 2-28-1 Yukawacho, Hakodate City, Hokkaido Phone: 0138-57-8282 Official website: https://www.yukurajinja.or.jp
