One of the largest jazz festivals in Japan started in 2007 (Heisei 19) with the concept of "Sapporo becoming a jazz city. Artists from Japan and abroad perform, and jazz events are held at various locations in the city. Park Jazz Live," in which about 300 groups from all over Japan perform throughout the city, is free of charge. The "North Jam Session" on the Sapporo Geijutsu no Mori Open-Air Stage features live performances by top artists from Japan and abroad, which can be viewed in any style, sitting or lying down on the grass. In winter, "Theater Jazz Live" is held at the Sapporo Bunka Geijutsu Theater hitaru.
