Last day of special exhibition closes at 16:00 (last admission at 15:30)
Lace glass, which reached its peak in the 16th century, is produced only on Murano Island in Venice, and its production technique is a secret method that has never been allowed to leave the island and has been passed down from generation to generation. The technique of lace glass making is a secret that has been handed down from generation to generation by skilled craftsmen and women.
Lace glass is said to have become very popular as an ornament to decorate luxurious palaces, captivating aristocrats throughout Europe with its fine patterns and beauty of lace expressed in milky white colored glass, which had never been seen in decoration before. Even today, due to the complexity of the patterns and the difficulty of production, there are only a few skilled craftsmen who are able to create beautiful and delicate patterns.
We would like to introduce the works of Mr. Giuliano Baralin, who has been creating a wide range of lace glass works from classical to contemporary arrangements.
Giuliano Baralin has been recognized as a "leading expert in lace glass" and the recipient of the 2014 "Glass in Venice" award for his ultimate mastery of the art. In this special exhibition, we are pleased to present a number of works that can only be seen at the museum, including the world's first attempt at lace glass Japanese tableware and a Japanese table setting, which Mr. Baralin created in 1995 at the request of the museum.
Since Mr. Baralin regrettably closed his studio in 2020 and retired from glass production, it is difficult to show such a large number of his works in one place even in his home city of Venice, and this exhibition is a very rare opportunity to see them all together.
We hope you will enjoy the delicate and beautiful world of lace glass created using a highly difficult technique.
The "Glass in Venice" award is a prestigious prize given to selected glass artists working in Venice. The artist of the year is selected by the Association of Museums of Venice and the Veneto Institute of Science, Literature and Arts.
