Both artists, Masashiro Yamaguchi (1903-1959) and Tatsuoki Nambata (1905-1997), were born in Asahikawa and were leading figures in the postwar Japanese abstract painting scene. Yamaguchi, who was also an industrial designer, produced many unique paintings characterized by sharp lines and paint smudges. Nambata, while changing his style, consistently faced his inner self and pioneered a poetic form of abstract expression. This exhibition will introduce the artistic world of these two artists, whose brilliance continues 120 years after their birth, through works from the museum's collection.
