Located almost in the center of the Kamikawa region in central Hokkaido, Asahikawa is embraced by the majestic Daisetsuzan Mountain Range. Here, the Ishikari River and its many tributaries merge, forming a fertile basin. The climate is characterized by large temperature differences both annually and between day and night, with four distinct and cool seasons.
The foundation of modern Asahikawa was built upon the activities of the Ainu people from ancient times and the history of pioneering. Since then, it has developed as a key transportation hub and logistics center. Today, as a core city in northern Hokkaido, it boasts well-developed urban functions, including medical and welfare facilities, educational institutions, cultural facilities, and public agencies.
In terms of industry, the city has a concentration of agriculture, such as rice farming which plays a vital role in Japan's food supply, manufacturing industries including food products and paper pulp, and craftsmanship industries like woodworking, represented by Asahikawa furniture, and machinery/metals. Furthermore, as a transportation and logistics hub for northern Hokkaido, wholesale, retail, and service industries have also flourished.
In recent years, with the expansion of airline routes, the number of international tourists has increased. Over 5 million tourists from both Japan and abroad visit annually, drawn to attractions such as the nationally famous Asahiyama Zoo and ski resorts with excellent snow quality.
