Horokanai Town is blessed with a rich natural environment, with 80% of its total area surrounded by forests, making it an easy place for many wild animals to live. However, in recent years, there has been increasing friction between humans and brown bears, with brown bears appearing in public places. The town is currently working on measures to combat brown bears, such as formulating a response policy for when brown bears are spotted and introducing animal alerts. In order to discuss measures to combat brown bears in the region, the Brown Bear Association, the NPO Lake Shumarinai World Center, and Horokanai Town have decided to hold the "2025 Brown Bear Forum in Horokanai," co-hosted by the Association of Brown Bears, the NPO Lake Shumarinai World Center, and Horokanai Town.
