Lecture: "War, Symbolism of Plants and Animals, and Memory Seen through Tobacco Packaging" (Event related to the Shoka no Mori Exhibition at the Faculty of Letters, Hokkaido University)

Date and Time

2025/11/9

13:30-15:00

This is a related event to the "Tobacco Packaging that Engraves Memories - The World Seen by the Golden Kite and the Dove" exhibition currently being held at the Faculty of Letters, Hokkaido University (September 5th - December 26th, 2025).
This exhibition focuses mainly on old cigarette packaging from the Meiji period to the prewar Showa period, and displays actual cigarette packaging, particularly from the late Meiji period onwards, to introduce the evolution of designs, the symbolism of plants and animals, and their connection to war.

As a related event to this special exhibition, a lecture will be held on the theme of "War, Flora and Fauna Symbolism, and Memory Seen through Cigarette Packaging."
Associate Professor Takayo Hisai (Graduate School of Letters, Hokkaido University), who is the project leader, will talk passionately about tobacco packaging from a historical and cultural perspective, sharing his thoughts and struggles about the exhibition and anecdotes, including the process that led to the planning of the tobacco packaging exhibition, the methods and secrets behind collecting the packages, why "Golden Bat" was renamed "Kinji" and "Cherry" was renamed "Sakura," and the connection between the dove, a symbol of peace, and war.
There may be some brands that are nostalgic or have special meaning for you.
We will also bring along many cigarette packages that could not be exhibited. Please come and see these valuable documents up close.

Whether you smoke or not, whether you like it or not, why not take a fresh look at cigarettes from a different perspective and learn about the cultural history of cigarette packaging, which we don't usually pay much attention to or have the opportunity to learn about?

Please apply by 10am on Sunday, November 9th using the application form below or the QR code on the flyer.
Capacity is 50 people. Please feel free to join us!
