This exhibition will feature 26 works from the museum's collection, all of which are Venetian glass mosaic paintings of Vincent van Gogh's masterpieces. These works were created by artisans from the mosaic artisan cooperative Cooperativa/Masaicisti (now Gruppo/Mosaicisti/Ravenna), which is involved in the restoration of cultural heritage in the city of Ravenna, Italy, a city rich in historically valuable mosaic murals.
While Van Gogh's dotted line drawings were influenced by the Impressionist technique of capturing light through color, they developed their own unique, powerful colors and brushstrokes. Their similarity to the texture of glass mosaic led to the idea of "expressing Van Gogh's works using the glass mosaic technique." In response to the museum's project, Ravana's mosaic artisans, Tani, also eagerly undertook this first-of-its-kind endeavor, completing the piece over the course of approximately three years. Visitors can enjoy the allure of Van Gogh's paintings, shining with thousands of pieces of glass, and the splendor of traditional glass mosaic techniques.
