Hiraoka Park

A forest of red and white plum trees heralds spring in Sapporo. Visitors can easily observe nature in the vast park.

Hiraoka Park is located about 11 km southeast of the center of Sapporo, covering an area of 66.4 hectares. More than half of the park is woodland, which is home to a variety of wild birds such as the red-cockaded woodpecker and many insects such as the Reverdin's stag beetle and onyanma. The park is also equipped with sports facilities such as a baseball field, tennis courts (fee required, reservations required), and a park golf course (free of charge), and is crowded with people enjoying sports on weekends and holidays. In the western part of the park, there is one of the largest plum groves in Sapporo with an area of 6.5 hectares, where approximately 1,200 plum trees are planted in a 4:6 ratio of red to white. 100,000 visitors come to view the flowers during the blooming period in May. The subtle hues of red and white plum blossoms contrast vividly with the green of the lawn and the blue of the sky, attracting many fans who visit every year.
