Lake Kussharo

The largest caldera lake in Japan, rich in nature

The word Kussharo comes from the Ainu word kutcharo (throat), meaning the outlet of a lake or swamp. Located in the Kussharo Caldera, one of the largest caldera lakes in the world, it is the largest caldera lake in Japan.
Because the lake was created by volcanic activity, many hot springs gush out along its shores. In addition to open-air baths dotted around the lake, there are also rare places where steam erupts, as well as agricultural greenhouses and large hotels that utilize the heat from the hot springs.
The charm of Lake Kussharo is its impressive scale and friendliness. While the magnificent scenery is typical of Hokkaido, it is the generosity with which it gently welcomes visitors to its shores that attracts so many people. Another feature of the lake is its beautiful water, despite its size. It is said that 80% of the water source is spring water. In search of beautiful water, people enjoy water sports such as camping, canoeing, and yachting in the summer, and in the winter, many swans, travelers from Siberia, gather at this lake.
