Wakoto Peninsula
The Wakoto Peninsula juts out from the south side of Lake Kussharo and looks like a gourd cut in half. With its high geothermal heat, it is a magical place where one can feel the pulse of the earth. The "Wakoto Nature Trail," which circles the peninsula with a view of the cobalt blue lake, is about 2.5 km long, and is a path through a lush forest with giant katsura trees and other large trees, where the sound of the wind blowing across the lake and the sounds of insects, including the "minmin zemi," a species designated as a natural treasure, are soothing, as well as being a popular flower path where visitors can see rare alpine plants up close. It is also popular as a flower trail where you can see precious alpine plants up close. At the tip of the peninsula, you can also see the "Oyakotsu Jigoku," where the earth erupts from the ground, and you can experience the breath of the earth.
There are two campgrounds on the peninsula, which are always crowded with people enjoying canoeing, fishing, and playing in the water during the summer months, as well as free outdoor hot springs open to everyone.
