Kussharo Kotan Ainu Folk Museum
You can hear the breath of the Ainu people...
This avant-garde building stands in a kotan on the shore of Lake Kussharo where the Ainu people have lived for centuries. The seven columns at the entrance represent the sacred number seven, symbolizing time in the universe, the circular dome of the main building symbolizes the architectural structure of the Tenen Region universe, and the 31 pillars standing inside symbolize the mountains and forests. The exhibits consist of five themes: Yukala Forest, Land of Kotan, Transition of Kotan, Running in the Mountains and Fields, and People Supporting Kotan, and a slide show of the Bear Festival. Slides of the Bear Festival are also shown. Visitors can hear the life and culture of the Ainu people.
