Matsumae Castle and Matsumae Castle Museum

Matsumae Castle (officially Fukuyama Castle) was the last castle built in Japan and was selected as one of the "100 Great Castles of Japan" and "Hokkaido Heritage". It also has a history of being attacked by Shinsengumi deputy chief Hijikata Toshizo during the Boshin War between the end of the Edo period and the Meiji period. After the wooden keep was destroyed by fire, a reinforced concrete reconstruction of the keep was completed and opened as the Matsumae Castle Museum. The contrast between the castle and the cherry blossoms in spring is breathtaking.
