Matsumae Castle / Matsumae Castle Museum
Matsumae Castle (officially Fukuyama Castle) is the last castle in Japan to be built in the traditional style, and has been selected as one of the '100 Fine Castles of Japan' and a 'Hokkaido Heritage' site. It also has a history of being attacked by Hijikata Toshizo, the vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, during the Boshin War from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. After the wooden castle keep was destroyed by fire, a reconstructed keep made of reinforced concrete was completed and opened as the Matsumae Castle Museum. The contrast between the cherry blossoms in spring and the castle is breathtaking.
