Matsumae Castle and Matsumae Castle Museum

Matsumae Castle (officially Fukuyama Castle) was the last castle built in Japan, and has been selected as one of the "100 Great Castles in Japan" and a "Hokkaido Heritage Site." During the Boshin War, which took place from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji era, Toshizo Hijikata, vice-chief of the Shinsengumi, attacked the castle. After the wooden castle tower burned down, a new one made of reinforced concrete was completed and opened as the Matsumae Castle Museum. The contrast between the cherry blossoms in spring and the castle is spectacular.
