So Separate Lake
Shikaribetsu Lake is the only natural lake in Daisetsuzan National Park, and with an elevation of 810m, it is in the highest place within Hokkaido, and its deepest part is approximately 100 meters. The lake's surroundings are surrounded by a primeval forest (Sakhalin fir, Yezo spruce, Erman's birch), and transmit the ancient nature to the present.
The lake is a "dammed lake" that was formed by a river being dammed up by an eruption approximately 30,000 years ago, and its circumference is approximately 13km. It forms nine bays on its complex shoreline, and floats Benten Island in the north of the lake. Tenbo Mountain, which is in the east of the lake, is called Lip Mountain (Kuchibiruyama) from its figure and the shape of its shadow reflected on the lake surface, and has become Shikaribetsu Lake's symbol.
In the surroundings, valuable wild animals such as the living fossil "pika," which is said to have been inhabiting since the ice age, and osprey, white-tailed eagle, black woodpecker, grey heron, etc., are inhabiting.
