Notoro Lake Coral Grass Colony
Located in Ubaranai on the southern shore of Lake Notoro, the 'Notoro Lake Coral Grass Colony' is Japan's largest colony of coral grass, also known as Akkeshiso.
The greatest attraction of this colony is the magnificent scenery in autumn. Every year from late August to late September, the coral grass, growing over an area of approximately 4 hectares, turns a beautiful coral-like red, reaching its peak season. The scene is described as 'like a crimson carpet has been laid out' and is breathtakingly beautiful. You can also enjoy the fantastic contrast with the blue sky.
At the Notoro Lake Coral Grass Colony, wooden boardwalks have been installed, allowing visitors to walk into the middle of the sprawling coral grass.
The 'Notoro Lake Coral Grass Festival' is held annually in mid-September when the grass is at its most vibrant red.
