SPOT
Cape Notoro
A cape jutting out into the Sea of Okhotsk, with only a lighthouse and a management office at its tip. From here, you can see Lake Notoro and the coast of Tokoro Town to the west, the entire Sea of Okhotsk to the north, and the Shiretoko mountain range in the distance to the east. In winter, it is the earliest place in Abashiri City to see drift ice, and the view is superb.
At night, Cape Notoro becomes completely dark throughout the year, making it the best spot for photographing stars on clear days. On some days, many shooting stars can also be observed. It is recommended to have a light to illuminate your path for safety. However, please be aware that wild animals such as Ezo red foxes and Ezo sika deer frequently appear.
The Cape Notoro Lighthouse is 21m high from the ground and 57m above sea level. It flashes once every 8 seconds, and its light reaches approximately 36 km. This lighthouse was first lit in 1917 (Taisho 6). It is the oldest reinforced concrete lighthouse in Hokkaido and has been shining for over a century.
The reading 'Notoro' originates from the Ainu word 'Not-oro,' which means 'place of the cape.' It is also famous as a filming location for commercials such as the Toyota Prius, and movies including 'Helen the Baby Fox,' 'The Chef of South Polar,' and 'If You Are the One.' In December 2025, the 'Bell for Granting Wishes' and 'Scallop Shell Ema' were installed, making it a popular tourist spot.
