Former Yoichi Fukuhara Fishing Grounds
Fukuhara Fishing Grounds is a group of buildings owned by the Fukuhara family, who settled in Hama-naka-cho, Yoichi-cho since the end of the Edo period and engaged in herring fishing. The buildings are a testament to the prosperity of herring fishing at its peak, and were the model for the interior of the Herring Palace in the NHK morning drama series "Massan." A nationally designated cultural property, you can enjoy cherry blossoms in the spring. By strolling around the spacious grounds, you can learn about the layout and role of each building while also getting a sense of how prosperous it was at the time.
The main building, the guardhouse, was used as accommodation for migrant fishermen, and the fishermen's lodge, known as the Daidokoro, has two floors in parts, creating a multi-level space where fishermen could sleep and eat together. During the peak herring fishing season, the floorboards were removed to create an improvised dining table so fishermen could eat with their shoes on. The rice and miso storehouse, where straw products and food were stored, had stones stuffed between the outer and inner walls to prevent rats from entering.
In addition, the archives where important documents and clothing were kept, the net storehouse where fishing nets were kept, and the drying area where herring milt and herring milt were dried and made into products have all been preserved in their original state, allowing visitors to learn about fishing management during the bustling days of herring fishing.
