Former Yoichi Fukuhara Fishing Ground
The Fukuhara Fishing Ground is a group of buildings owned by the Fukuhara family, who settled in Hamanaka-cho, Yoichi-machi from the end of the Edo period and engaged in herring fishing. The buildings tell of the prosperity of the herring fishery in its heyday, and were used as the model for the interior of the herring palace in NHK's morning TV series "Massan". It is a nationally designated cultural asset, and cherry blossoms can be enjoyed in the spring. A stroll through the spacious grounds will give visitors an idea of the layout and role of each building, as well as a sense of how the area was active in those days.
The main building, the banya, was used as a lodging space for migrant fishermen, and the fishermen's pool, called a "daidokoro," a wooden floor with two floors, was partially built to allow fishermen to sleep and eat together in a multi-story space. During the peak of the herring fishing season, the floorboards were removed so that the fishermen could eat with their feet on the ground, creating a makeshift dining table. In the rice and miso warehouses, where straw products and foodstuffs were stored, stones were packed between the outer and inner walls to prevent rodents from entering.
In addition, the archives where important documents and clothes were stored, the net storehouse where fishing nets and other items were stored, and the drying area where kazunoko (herring roe) and albacore taken from herring were dried to make products have been preserved in the same condition as they were in those days, giving visitors an insight into the fishing business during the era when the herring fishery was thriving.
