Iwaibogi Sluice
The Iwaibogi Sluice was constructed as part of a flood control project that began in 1926 following the Kushiro River flood of 1920, and was completed in 1931.
It was originally built to transport timber from the Kushiro River, but since the Kushiro Main Line, which opened around the same time, took over the main role of timber transport, this sluice gate has never been opened since its completion. Even so, its quaint appearance continues to be loved by many people as an atmospheric feature of the Kushiro Marshland. From the sluice gate, you can see Mt.
Ouakan can be seen clearly, especially in winter when the weather is good.
The sunset from here is also great! Watching the entire marshland turn the color of the sunset may put you in a romantic mood.
If you have never seen the sunset over the marshland, why don't you go there...I am sure you will be satisfied.
New Sluice Gate and Sluice ParkIn place of the aging sluice gate, construction of the new Iwahogi Sluice Gate began in 1985 and was completed in 1990. After this, an administration building with sluice gate operation functions and a museum, etc., a waterway, a pond for fine-tuning the flow rate, and a gate are scheduled to be constructed, and the area around the sluice gate is planned to be turned into a park as a park to familiarize visitors with the river, making the most of the historical landscape.
