SPOT
Maruyama Observatory
From the observation deck located on a small hill at the foothills of Iwanai Mountain, the townscape of Iwanai and the Shakotan Peninsula can be viewed at a glance, and it is a popular spot where night views can be enjoyed to one's heart's content. Iwanai Night View was certified as "Japan Night View Heritage" in 2018.
As a new place of relaxation where the town of Iwanai and the Shakotan Peninsula can be viewed at a glance, it has gained popularity among families for excursions and picnics, etc. In the vicinity of this observation deck, facilities such as a plaza and a promenade that goes around thirty-three Kannon statues are also maintained. Morning, noon, evening, and with each of the four seasons, the colors of the mountains and the sea change, and also a free large telescope is installed.
The panorama that can be viewed at a glance from the foot of Iwanai Mountain is truly a jewel box. Not only red and blue, but beyond the seven colors that sparkle, the Shakotan Peninsula and the Sea of Japan weave a contrast, creating a wonderful location. 30 minutes after sunset, the color of the sky changes to reddish-purple. Good photos can be taken if a tripod is attached to the camera.
