Maruyama Observatory
The observation deck, located on a small hill at the foot of Mt. Iwanai, offers a panoramic view of the town of Iwanai and the Shakotan Peninsula, making it a popular spot from which to enjoy the night view to your heart's content. The Iwanai night view was designated a "Japan Night View Heritage" in 2018.
As a new place of relaxation from which you can get a panoramic view of the town of Iwanai and the Shakotan Peninsula, it has become popular with families on excursions and picnics. Near this observation deck, there are facilities such as a plaza and a promenade that leads around the 33 Kannon statues. The colors of the mountains and sea change with the seasons, morning, afternoon, evening, and there is also a large telescope available for free use.
The panoramic view from the foot of Mt. Iwanai is truly a jewel box. Beyond the seven colors of red and blue, the contrast between the Shakotan Peninsula and the Sea of Japan creates a wonderful location. 30 minutes after sunset, the sky turns reddish purple. You can take good photos by attaching a tripod to your camera.
