Iwanai Town is a beautiful, historic port town with a population of about 13,000, located in the West Shakotan region of Hokkaido. It boasts a scenic landscape with views of the deep blue Sea of Japan and Mount Iwanai of the Niseko mountain range, and is easily accessible, approximately a two-hour drive from Sapporo City and about an hour and fifteen minutes from Otaru City. The town once prospered greatly from the herring fishing boom, and its rich history and culture are still alive today.
Due to the influence of the Tsushima Current, the climate is relatively mild for Hokkaido, with cool summers making for a very comfortable environment. The natural landscape is beautiful with changing expressions throughout the four seasons.
